How to Properly Wash Your Hair? 10 Top Tips

Table of contents

Hair washing is a simple activity, performed by many people even daily. Unfortunately, we often make mistakes while washing our hair and unknowingly influence the deterioration of its condition. In today's entry you will find many tips on how to wash your hair properly and what mistakes to avoid in order not to make it look and condition worse. I hope they will be useful.

How often should I wash my hair?

I think the entry on how to wash your hair properly should start with how often you should do it. A common myth, which has been trying to dispel for many years, is that hair should not be washed every day because then it starts to get greasy more quickly. On the one hand, this may be true, because if we wash our hair every day and use strong cleansing shampoos for this, we may break the natural protective barrier of the scalp. As a result, it will produce more sebum and hair will lose its freshness faster. But if we use gentle shampoos and we have hair that needs to be refreshed frequently, there are no contraindications not to do so.

It is also not true that if you have greasy hair, you should go through with it as long as possible to make it greasy more slowly. We should absolutely not do this because once the greasy hair doesn't look aesthetically pleasing and two times the sebum, sebum and dirt accumulated on the head will clog the pores of the skin and weaken the bulbs, which will cause hair to fall out. Of course, we can try to delay washing your hair by one day, but it is better not to wait while washing your hair longer.

What shampoo to wash your hair with?

The method of washing hair is crucial for proper hair cleaning and care. However, before I describe it to you step by step, I will focus on what you can't wash your hair well without, namely a hair shampoo.

Shampoos for everyday use should be as gentle as possible on the hair. The ideal is a shampoo that does not contain strong washing substances that can irritate the scalp (the most popular are SLS and SLES) and silicones that leave a coating that sticks to your hair.

Such a shampoo will cleanse and dry the scalp very hard, and will also apply silicone to the hair.

What composition should a good shampoo for everyday use have? The best shampoo will be one that contains mild cleansing and purifying substances such as Cocamidopropyl Betaine or Lauryl Glucoside. A shampoo with a medical soapbox will also be a great choice. The shampoo containing Coco Sodium Sulfate, a much milder substance than SLS, will not be a bad shampoo either. Please also pay attention to the other ingredients of the shampoo. Besides the mentioned silicones, it is better to avoid the addition of parabens and artificial dyes and strong fragrances. Vegetable oils (however, there shouldn't be too many of them in a shampoo for everyday use), natural moisturizing ingredients, herbs and proteins are welcome.

A cleansing shampoo, which is worth reaching for once a week, is designed to cleanse the scalp and hair of substances built on them. These will include silicones, residues from care products and of course dust and dirt. Such a shampoo must have a strong cleansing detergent (preferably SLS) at the very beginning of the list of its ingredients (second place, directly after water). It is best that it has neither silicones nor oils in its composition, and for its effect to be as effective as possible, it should be left on your hair for 3-5 minutes.

    How to wash hair properly?

You already know that hair should be washed as often as it needs and what shampoo to choose for it. From this section you will learn how to wash your hair properly. The presented method is recommended by Natalia Pawłowska, the author of Blondhaircare.com blog and this part of the entry is based on her article: How to wash hair and scalp properly? Choose best conditioner and shampoo for hair types. There are 10 steps, which can be your shampooing routine. Remember, that is good to use warm water to wash your hair. Also remember to choose the right cosmetics for your hair type.

    Step 1.

It's important to wash  you hair every time when they need to wash. It's good to make your own shampooning routine.

Before you start to wash your hair, you will thoroughly comb it. Use warm water. This will make the hair tangled less tangled during washing, wet it quicker and easier to apply the shampoo on it.

Attention! Dishedding your hair before washing does not apply to curly hair, which we only comb wet when there is a conditioner on it.

    Step 2.

Set the water temperature so that it is neither cold nor too hot.  Water that is too cold or too hot has a bad effect on the scalp, sebaceous glands and weakens hair. Moisten the scalp and hair thoroughly.

    Step 3

Do not pour the shampoo directly onto the hair. First, dilute it with water to make it milder for the skin and hair. Diluting the shampoo also makes it easier to spread it through your hair and allows you to use less shampoo.

    Step 4.

Gently massage the shampoo onto the scalp. Do not scratch the skin, do not rub the hair. The head foam will clean the hair, but if you think it should be washed more thoroughly, stroke the hair with the foam in the direction of hair growth.

    Step 5.

If necessary, divide the hair washing into two stages: a pre-wash and a basic wash (I wash my hair this way myself). During the pre-cleaning process, dirt particles and cosmetic residues such as hairspray are loosened. At this stage, the shampoo foams very little and you may have the impression that there is not enough of it in your hair. After rinsing your hair after pre-washing, proceed to the second stage and perform a few minutes' massage, thoroughly cleaning your scalp and hair.

    Step 6.

Rinse the shampoo off your head and hair thoroughly using plenty of warm water.

    Step 7.

Dry the hair by squeezing excess water with a soft towel. Apply conditioner, lotion or mask to your hair. It is important that the water does not drip from your hair at this stage, as it may dilute the conditioner or mask, thus weakening its effect.

    Step 8.

Washing your hair after rinsing the conditioner/balm/ mask ends with cool water or rinsed water to close the scales.

    Step 9.

Gently drain off the excess water, but do not tangle your hair with a towel, do not knot it, do not tie it tightly with a towel. Wet hair is very sensitive and susceptible to damage, so you can damage it very quickly. A soft cotton towel, a muslin towel or a cotton t-shirt will help to drain hair from water.

    Step 10.

Rub oil or protective serum into the damp ends of the hair and let them dry naturally.

Washing hair properly is not complicated at all, but it certainly requires a little more attention from us and should not be done quickly. Remember this because hair washing can damage the hair structure and even the care products used at a later stage may not be sufficient to repair the damage.

Very important in everyday haircare is spray conditioner. You can also aply apple cider vinegar after washing your hair. It's important to have your own technique in washing. A specific hair type requires the use of appropriate cosmetics - purifying shampoo, hair color mask and conditioner. Shampoo and conditioner should be selected according to the hair type.

A water filter is also extremely important, thanks to which washing will be more gentle on the hair. The results of the right wash your hair will be visible immediately.
